Infectious Bovine Rhinotracheitis

Infectious Bovine Rhinotracheitis (IBR) is caused by infection with Bovine Herpesvirus type-1. This virus is highly prevalent in New Zealand cattle.

IBR can cause herpes lesions in the respiratory and/or reproductive tract. Once infected an animal remains infected for life, and can shed virus on multiple occasions, especially when the animal is under stress. This exposes more cattle to infection.

IBR infection in cattle can cause:

  •  runny eyes
  •  nasal discharge
  •  coughing
  •  difficulty breathing

IBR infection in breeding females in dairy herds or other intensive cattle farming systems can be costly, especially for naive heifers entering the herd. Contact your vet or the AgriHealth Technical team for advice.
IBR infection in bulls can also be problematic, especially during mating, as bulls can infect breeding females (and vice versa), and may suffer fertility problems if infected themselves. It is recommended that bulls are vaccinated against IBR prior to mating.
