Coccidiosis in Cattle

Coccidiosis is a parasitic disease of the intestinal tract of animals caused by coccidian protozoa. The disease spreads from one animal to another by contact with infected faeces or ingestion of infected tissue. Diarrhoea, which may become bloody in severe cases, is the primary symptom. Most animals infected with coccidia are asymptomatic, but young or immunocompromised animals may suffer severe symptoms and death.

Coccidiosis in young cattle is generally prevented by adding an ionophore coccidiostat such as Monotec 100 microGranulate  or Monotec 200 microGranulate to the calf feed.  It is important each animal receives an adequate dose, as animals not consuming sufficient treated feed may not be protected.

Contact your vet for advice if animals appear clinically infected as Toltrox 5% may be an appropriate treatment for affected calves and at risk herd-mates.
