Oestrus Synchrony

Oestrus synchrony programs involve administration of a program of treatments for sexually mature and cycling cows and heifers, which results in this group of animals coming into heat (oestrus) and ovulating at approximately the same time.

There are two main programs for synchronising heifers. Double PG is only a viable option when (i) animals are ovulating (having reached puberty) and (ii) heat detection and AI is available for a minimum of four days. In most scenarios, DIB Co-Synch will provide a superior return on investment for NZ dairy heifers or beef cows due to the superior expected pregnancy outcomes with this program.

The benefits of synchronising dairy heifers are:

  • - An additional 3% of heifers pregnant at the end of the mating period
  • - Conceiving 11 days earlier, which will result in heifers calving 11 days earlier. For farmers, this means 11 additional days in milk and higher total milk production
  • - 11 additional days for recovery after calving prior to the next mating period
  • - Tighter calving spread which is simpler to manage for farmers
  • - Faster genetic gain

An alternative program where AI occurs at the same time as final Gonasyn injection is also acceptable for beef heifers. A ten day program is also suitable for beef cows where cows are inseminated to detected heat from Day 7 onwards, the Gonasyn injection is given in the afternoon of Day 9, and cows are inseminated on the morning of Day 10 (within 16 hours of Gonasyn injection).
