  • Injectable antibiotic suitable for treating clinical mastitis

  • Contains penethamate hydroiodide - a precursor of benzylpenicillin

Benefits

  • Front-line treatment for the most common mastitis bacteria in NZ cows and heifers, including Streptococci and Staphylococci

  • Suitable treatment for multi-quarter mastitis infections in cows and heifers

  • Suitable treatment where cow behavioural issues such as kicking makes it difficult to infuse intramammary products

Pack Sizes

PenethaOne is available in 5MIU and 10MIU vials, with diluent also supplied.

Also available as a ten cow pack which contains:
x10 PenethaOne 10MIU doses
x10 PenethaOne 5MIU doses
x10 Needles
x3 Syringes

Action

Penethamate is able to cross from the blood stream into milk, where penethamate becomes 'trapped'.  This increases effectiveness of penethamate for mastitis treatment.

Indication

PenethaOne is indicated for the treatment and control of infections caused by penicillin-sensitive Gram-positive bacteria that cause mastitis, metritis, respiratory infections and footrot in cattle.

Dosage

Use 5 MIU once daily (equivalent to 10,000 - 15,000 IU/kg bodyweight/day) for 3 to 5 days.

Alternatively, for mastitis in lactating dairy cattle, use 10MIU on Day 1 followed by 5MIU on Day 2.

Reconstitute the powder contained in the vial by adding all the contents (18mL / 36mL) of the diluent supplied.  Shake well after reconstitution. Administer by intramuscular (IM) injection only, in the anterior half of the neck. A maximum dose volume of 20mL per injection site should be administered.

Withholding times

Meat: 7 days

Milk: 48 hours (5 MIU dose); 60 hours (10 MIU dose plus 5 MIU).

Special Precautions

Penethamate hydriodide is an antibiotic in the penicillin family and is considered highly important to human and animal health. Use of antibiotics should only be for the minimum period needed to meet the clinical objective.
