Oestrus synchrony programs generally involve administration of reproductive hormones to cause sexually mature and cycling females to come into heat (oestrus) and ovulate at approximately the same time.

There are two main programs for synchronising heifers. Double PG is only a viable option when (i) animals are ovulating (having reached puberty) and (ii) heat detection and AI is available for a minimum of four days.
