Oestrus Synchrony Programs

Oestrus synchrony programs generally involve administration of a program of treatments to sexually mature and cycling cows and heifers which results in this group of animals coming into heat (oestrus) and ovulating at approximately the same time.

There are two main programs for synchronising heifers.  Double PG is only a viable option when (i) animals are ovulating (having reached puberty) and (ii) heat detection and AI  is available for a minimum of four days.  In most scenarios, DIB CoSynch will provide a superior return on investment for NZ dairy heifers or beef cows due to superior expected pregnancy outcomes with this program.

The benefits of synchronising heifers are:
• More days in milk providing more farm income
• Compact calving over a short period
• More time to begin cycling prior to next mating
• Faster genetic gain and additional AB heifer calves
